Bořek Šípek

Latest works by Czech designer in furniture, glass and porcelain.
Bořek Šípek was born in Prague. He left Czechoslovakia just after the Russian invasion of 1968, when he had just started studying architecture. He moved to Germany where he finished architecture and philosophy, and for eight years taught Design Theory in Hannover and Essen; until he considered that theory and practice were incompatible for him and decided to settle in Amsterdam and dedicate his time exclusively to practice.
Borek is a designer with a special sensitivity toward very different materials: wood, metal, ceramics, glass.
As a teenager he learned the traditional art of working glass, which has resulted in subsequent collections of vases and glassware. His latest collection of furniture is made of wicker, after staying in the Philippines long enough to learn the techniques and forms required by the material.
His work is intuitive, sculptural. “For some time, I found that I had to work with my hands, not my brain”. He relishes primitive art, mythology, ritual memory, organic shapes rather than the functionality of the object. “I believe in objects that have a propensity to “be”. This is my trade”.
