On Thursday, 17 June, the Braun 1999 prize was awarded in Kronberg, Germany.
The Braun awards initiated in 1967 with the intention to bring design to the public and boost new talent. It was the first International prize awarded by the German industry to promote design. Today it is one of the most recognized awards within this framework.
The theme for the 1999 edition was “Cooperation: Technology and Design”. It intended to extol the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. The challenge of combining young designers and engineers is to establish a dialogue between the two worlds, design and technology, to create new and better products to meet the needs of the public.
The competition is open to design, technology/engineering students (as well as those who have graduated within the previous 3 years) worldwide. As in previous editions, the participating projects are judged on their merits, regardless of their relevance in the Braun product range.
An international jury is responsible for selecting the award. In this 12th competition the jury was chaired by Meter Schneider (Director of Corporate Design, Braun GMBH) and composed by Albrecht Jestädt (Executive Director of Research and Development, Braun GMBH), Professor Haruhiko Harry Asada from Massachussets Institute of Technology (Boston) and Mai Felip (Barcelona Design Centre). The prize consists of 80,000. DM.
The exhibition of the 28 finalists were displayed at La Sala Vinçon from 10 September to 2 October 1999.
